Private and public access
New applications are private. You can publish one when it is ready, and make it private again.
- A private link works on the computer running Hallvi, and on your laptop if you use Hallvi from another computer.
- Publishing gives the application an HTTPS address, at sslip.io or at your own domain.
- Create the administrator account before you publish, because many applications give it to whoever opens them first.
- Only this computera private link
- Anyone with the addressHTTPS, no domain needed
- Your own domainHTTPS at a name you own
Private
Hallvi gives you a link such as http://127.0.0.1:4757. It works on the computer running Hallvi, and on your laptop if you use Hallvi from another computer. The application's ports stay closed to the internet.
Reopen a private link
The tunnel closes when that computer restarts or loses its network, and can close when Hallvi restarts. On the Access page, use Reconnect for a saved private route. Hallvi asks Pi to restore it through the main conversation under the existing permission mode. If you use Hallvi from a laptop, first restore the laptop-to-Hallvi SSH connection; this action does not do that.
Public
Many applications give their administrator account to whoever opens them first. Create yours through the private link before you publish.
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Make it public | The address becomes https://203-0-113-9.sslip.io for a server at 203.0.113.9. sslip.io is a free outside service that turns the IP address into a name. |
| Use my domain | If Cloudflare runs your DNS, Hallvi adds the record with a token for that zone. Otherwise you add the A record Hallvi shows, remove other records for that name, and leave any proxy off. Hallvi waits for it. |
| Open it to my network | Hallvi shows this for a server at home. Devices on the same network can open it over plain HTTP. Hallvi does not make a home server public. |
For a public address, Hallvi opens ports 80 and 443, puts Caddy in front, gets a certificate, and checks the address from outside before it reports success.
Make it private again
Press Make it private again on the Access page, or ask for it in the conversation. Hallvi undoes the publishing, and removes only DNS records it added. Remove any record you added yourself.
Limits today
- Publishing has been tested with IPv4 only.
- Hallvi can add DNS records only at Cloudflare.
- Hallvi checks that certificate renewal is set up, but has not watched one renew.
